What does it take to transform a legacy family business into a modern retail powerhouse? Rashi Chheda Shah, Director at Just In Time and a Global Family Managed Business (GMFB) alumna, shares how she blended tradition with strategy to expand one of India’s leading premium watch retailers.

Q1. Every family business begins with a vision. Can you tell us about the early days of Just In Time and what the business looked like when you first became actively involved?

The early days focused intensely on foundational values, and I saw a brilliant opportunity to elevate our legacy into a modern, scalable enterprise. Stepping into Just In Time allowed me to merge my deep-rooted passion with a clear understanding of India's evolving retail landscape.

Q2. Growing a legacy business comes with both responsibility and opportunity. What were some key decisions or initiatives you led that helped transform the brand into the large, thriving enterprise it is today?

My focus immediately shifted toward streamlining our operations, strengthening our human resources, and enhancing financial discipline. By building a robust operational infrastructure, we reinforced our reputation for quality and absolute trust among premium watch collectors.

Q3. Family businesses often balance tradition with innovation. Being a woman in India, how did you navigate preserving your family’s values while scaling and modernising the brand for a new generation of customers?

Implementing a holistic systems-driven approach ensures that every expansion aligns perfectly with our core values of authenticity and meticulous service. We deliver an innovative customer-centric experience while honouring the deep trust established by our founders. This integration ensures that our modern retail environments remain incredibly personal and prestigious.

Q4. Behind every successful journey is support and trust. Who played a defining role in helping you grow as a leader while carrying forward your family’s dream?

My Parents, Rajesh Chheda and Bina Rajesh Chheda, remain my most profound source of inspiration and practical mentorship. He instilled in me the essential values of discipline and foresight from a very young age. His early lessons gave me the strong sense of responsibility and purpose that continues to guide my entire leadership journey today.
Post my marriage, my biggest strength comes from my husband, Ronak Shah, who has stood by me at every step we have taken to get Just In Time to where it is today.

Q5. You completed your MBA and the highly esteemed Global Family Managed Business (GFMB) program. Could you share how this specific course empowered you to overcome challenges and expand Just In Time at the director level?

The GFMB curriculum honed my strategic and managerial acumen, enabling me to deeply understand the unique dynamics of family-run enterprises. This equipped me with advanced tools for modernising operations while preserving our heritage. As a result, I entered the family business with a clear sense of how to navigate India's retail landscape and our pan-India expansion.

Q6. This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Give to Gain”, focusing on mentorship support and uplifting others. How do you believe women can support and empower one another in business and leadership?

I believe that sharing knowledge and providing platforms for women to lead creates a highly resilient and innovative enterprise. Moreover, cultivating a strong team culture relies entirely on fostering collaboration and uplifting every individual across all functions.

Q7. As a woman leading a large family-run brand like Just In Time, what message would you like to share with other women who aspire to grow their family businesses or step into leadership roles today?

It’s important to channel your energy into continuous learning to fuel fresh ideas and forward-looking strategies.
Second, to embrace your heritage with immense pride and use your unique perspective to elevate your brand on the global stage.
And finally, to lead with boundless ambition and let your purpose drive you to build a magnificent modern legacy.
