A seat at the table with Chef Kunal Kapoor

What would you do if your dish landed on Chef Kunal Kapoor’s table?
Would you focus on the flavours? The presentation? The smallest details you hoped he would notice? Or would you simply wait for that first reaction?

For our Hospitality Business Leadership (HBL) Batch 6 students at SP Jain Global, this wasn’t a hypothetical question. It happened.

With their culinary creations ready to be tasted, our students had the rare opportunity to present their dishes to one of India’s most celebrated chefs and hear his thoughts first-hand. But what made the experience memorable was that the evening wasn’t just about what was on the plate. It was about the journey behind it.

Chef Kunal spoke openly about his own journey; from his first job and the challenges he encountered to the failures that shaped him and the experiences that helped him grow. There was no glamorous version of the story, just an honest account of what it takes to build a career, keep learning, and stay committed when things don’t always go as planned.

For the students, that honesty was perhaps the most valuable takeaway. Success, they discovered, is rarely about getting everything right the first time. It comes from showing up, learning from mistakes, staying curious, and having the patience to keep getting better.

Then came the part everyone had been waiting for!

One by one, students presented their culinary creations to Chef Kunal. He tasted each dish, shared his thoughts, appreciated the creativity behind the ideas, and offered practical suggestions on how they could be improved.

For a student, receiving feedback directly from an accomplished chef is an experience that stays with you. A simple observation about a dish can change the way you think about presentation. A suggestion about flavour can make you look at your own work differently.

That is what made the session special. The students weren’t simply listening to an industry leader speak. They were engaging with him, presenting their work, asking questions, receiving feedback, and learning from a real experience.

For someone preparing to enter the industry, these moments can make all the difference. They help turn an idea of hospitality into something real and tangible.

Chef Kunal’s interaction with the students was a reminder that there is no single formula for success. Every career has its challenges, every professional has had their share of failures, and there is always more to learn. What matters is how you respond, how you grow, and how much you care about what you do.

Because sometimes, the best lessons aren’t served in a classroom. They’re served on a plate.
