The craft, business and story behind a luxury watch with Sarosh Mody, Founder of Luxury Watch Works

A luxury watch may sit quietly on the wrist, but there is a lot more behind it than telling time. From the movement of its smallest components to the hands that carefully assemble them, every timepiece carries years of craftsmanship, expertise, and thought.

A luxury watch may sit quietly on the wrist, but there is a lot more behind it than telling time. From the movement of its smallest components to the hands that carefully assemble them, every timepiece carries years of craftsmanship, expertise, and thought.

For students of the Global Luxury Goods & Services Management (MGLuxM) program, a masterclass with Sarosh Mody, Founder of Luxury Watch Works, on 5th August 2026, offered an opportunity to look closely at what makes a luxury watch worth owning, collecting, maintaining, and eventually passing on.

The session began with the story of watchmaking itself, tracing how watches have evolved over time and what goes into the different types of movements and components found inside them. Students explored the manufacturing process and the level of precision and craftsmanship required to bring a timepiece to life.

But the conversation went beyond what happens inside a watch.

Students looked at the luxury watch market and how customers today approach ownership differently. With pre-owned watches becoming an important part of the market, the relationship between a brand and its customer does not necessarily end with a purchase. Discussions around maintenance, repairs, and after-sales care introduced students to another side of luxury: the responsibility of preserving something that may hold value for years to come.

The discussion also explored what happens when a watch needs care after purchase. Sarosh Mody spoke about a concierge service that helps watch owners with maintenance and repairs, making the process simpler and more convenient.

As the discussion moved from craftsmanship to the business of luxury, students explored how watches are marketed and positioned, from traditional branding to influencer and digital marketing. They also looked at where the industry is heading, with conversations around sustainability, customisation, and emerging technologies.

The session also offered a different perspective on ownership. As Sarosh Mody shared, “A fine mechanical watch is one of the few personal objects designed to be maintained, repaired and passed through generations.”

For the students, the masterclass offered a new way of looking at luxury watches. Not simply as products that carry a price tag, but as objects where craftsmanship, storytelling, customer relationships, and long-term value come together.

Experiences like these are an integral part of the MGLuxM program, giving students the opportunity to learn directly from industry experts and see how ideas discussed in the classroom take shape in the world of luxury.
